Tooth-Colored Fillings in Chicago’s Gold Coast & Hinsdale, IL

Tooth colored fillings, also known as resin fillings, composite fillings or white fillings, are designed to look like a natural tooth. Resin fillings are used to restore the part of a tooth that has been lost due to decay or through accidental damage. The dental resin material is used to create a strong and durable filling. Unlike a silver filling, this type of filling is bonded with an adhesive to further support the remaining tooth structure, and actually strengthening the tooth. Resin fillings often require less removal of healthy natural tooth material and tend to be less sensitive to temperature than amalgam (silver) fillings. Resin fillings can be completed in one office visit.

Why Replace Silver Fillings?

When an amalgam filling (silver filling) breaks or shows signs of deterioration, Dr. Weller recommends removing the old filling and any unhealthy tooth structure and restoring the tooth with a resin filling, onlay, or crown, depending on the size of the filling and condition of the tooth. Amalgam fillings often wear down, over time, and begin to break away from the tooth. When this happens, the tooth is no longer sealed or protected from decay. Cavities often form in these spaces due to the food and bacteria that can become trapped. Replacing the worn or broken fillings will not only improve the aesthetics of the tooth, but also the strength and health.
